Know More About FSSAI License Registration

Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, commonly known as FSSAI is a legal authority offering food licenses to the Indian Food Business Operators (FBO). To ensure food quality, the FBOs need to follow the rules and regulations as set by FSSAI.

Moreover, in order to run a food business in India, an FBO needs an FSSAI license or registration which may vary due to several factors such as production scale, nature of business, type of operations, and so on. Once a business is registered with FSSAI, a 14-digit unique number is generated and the business needs to print this number on their food packages.

FSSAI registration is basically a food safety certificate that ensures the security of food products. Every type of FBO, including manufacturers, traders, grocery shops, restaurants, and so on can apply for the FSSAI registration. Furthermore, it also gives us a surety that the food we are consuming has passed several quality checks and is safe for consumption. This also reduces the risks of adulteration, substandard products.

Types of FSSAI License

There could be three different types of FSSAI license based on the scale of business, turnover and the type of business operations:

  1. FSSAI Basic Registration: This food license is for small Food Business Operators that have either recently started their business or have a low annual turnover. The FBOs with an annual turnover of less than INR 12 lakhs need to do the basic registration and can be later upgraded according to your business’ sales graph productivity.
  2. FSSAI State Registration: This food license is for medium-sized FBOs. Those businesses with an annual turnover of more than INR 12 lakhs but less than INR 20 crores can apply for the FSSAI State Registration. This license can also be upgraded according to your business’ sales graph productivity.

FSSAI Central Registration: This food license is for large-scale FBOs. Businesses with an annual turnover of more than INR 20 crores are eligible to apply for the FSSAI Central Registration. You may also need this license if your business supply food products to government offices or is involved in the import and export of food products.
